Great Songs from My Favorite Year in Music: 1985, Part 13

Felt - "Primitive Painters"

(Single Release: 1985)
Felt is yet another criminally underrated band from the 80s. They put out ten albums in their short run, but never quite broke big in America. "Primitive Painters" is arguably their best song, a building juggernaut of a track, complete with jangly guitars and the powerful dueling voices of Lou Reed-like singer Lawrence (Hayward) and Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins. I'd venture to say that this song could stand easily alongside other dream-pop songs of the era, including "Life in a Northern Town," "The Killing Moon," and "Under the Milky Way." Yeah, it's that good. Felt ended up becoming a huge influence on later bands, including Belle & Sebastian. It's a rare occasion when a pop song can be considered true poetry and not just a facsimile, but the songs of Felt are firmly in the former category.
